Zinc Deficiency in Maize: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment in Pakistan
Maize is especially sensitive to low zinc availability. A sound diagnosis combines symptom location, field pattern and a soil or tissue test; colour alone can confuse zinc deficiency with root stress, cold injury or another nutrient shortage.
What zinc deficiency looks like
Symptoms usually develop on younger leaves. Look for broad pale-yellow or whitish bands beside the midrib while the midrib and margins can remain greener. Plants may be shortened, with compressed internodes and delayed development.
Deficiency is often stronger on eroded knolls, levelled areas, sandy patches or exposed calcareous subsoil. Compare affected and healthy plants of the same age and inspect roots before choosing a treatment.

Why Pakistan's soils create risk
FAO guidance identifies maize as a crop in which zinc deficiency is pronounced on calcareous soils. High pH and calcium carbonate reduce soluble zinc. Heavy phosphorus application can aggravate a marginal zinc problem, so more phosphorus is not a substitute for diagnosis.
Ask the laboratory which zinc extractant and interpretation range it uses. A raw number cannot be interpreted reliably without the method, soil type and local calibration.
Preventive soil zinc or foliar correction?
Soil-applied zinc sulphate, uniformly incorporated or placed according to the label, is the usual preventive option for confirmed deficiency. Because zinc has limited movement in soil, even coverage and placement near developing roots matter.
Foliar zinc is faster in-season when deficiency is confirmed, but an excessive concentration or incompatible tank mix can injure leaves. Follow the maize label, observe compatibility instructions and spray during cool conditions.
A better buying decision
Map symptoms, inspect roots, rule out waterlogging and herbicide injury, and compare test results from affected and healthy zones. Then select a registered product whose route and timing match the problem.
