Zinc sulphate is the standard, cost-effective way to correct zinc deficiency across field crops, but in highly alkaline or calcareous soils the zinc it releases can quickly bind to calcium and become unavailable to plant roots again — a problem chelated zinc is specifically designed to avoid.
Chelated zinc EDTA 5% wraps the zinc ion in an organic molecule that keeps it soluble and plant-available even in high-pH soils, making it more efficient — though more expensive per unit of zinc — than plain zinc sulphate in tough alkaline conditions.
In practice, most field crops like rice, wheat, and cotton on moderately alkaline soils do well on zinc sulphate at a fraction of the cost. Chelated zinc tends to earn its higher price on high-value crops like citrus, vegetables, and nursery plants, or on soils with a documented history of poor response to sulphate-based zinc.
A practical approach many growers use is zinc sulphate as the base soil application every season, with chelated zinc reserved for foliar sprays or fertigation on sensitive crops where a fast, reliable correction matters more than cost per acre.
